BECOME AN ASSOCIATE NATURALIST AT GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK |
---|
Grand Canyon National Park's geological significance, diverse natural history, fascinating human history, and unique beauty make it a paramount outdoor classroom. Educators throughout the United States recognize the Canyon's potential as a living, learn ing laboratory and interdisciplinary theme in the classroom. Many successful educational programs have been developed which enable students to learn about the world through the Grand Canyon, in classrooms, outdoor settings and at the park itself. These programs have used the Grand Canyon to teach diverse subjects across the curriculum. We want to celebrate this wealth of creative education and share it with others!
By popular demand, the National Park Service, Grand Canyon Association, Museum of Northern Arizona, and Northern Arizona University are again working in partnership to create this unique week-long curriculum development workshop. This workshop will prov ide an opportunity for educators to collaborate, share, learn, and together compile effective lessons about the Canyon and to learn about field trip possibilities for their own students. An optional one-day Colorado River float trip will also be availab le. The workshop will be a place for learning through interaction. Time will be provided for intense curriculum development, field trips and explorations of the park, the sharing of creative classroom lessons, and social time to interact with educators of all grade levels from throughout the United States.
The workshop will be held July 27 through August 2, 1997, at Grand Canyon National Park. A stipend will be provided for approximately 24 educators to cover apartment-style lodging at Albright Training Center and most meals. University credit will be av ailable. Pre-service, practicing and retired educators, and instructors in informal education programs are encouraged to apply. Participants will be selected upon previous experience or interest in designing curriculum related to the Grand Canyon region.
